#1807, an ALCO S-1 diesel switcher, has a bit of an odd history. Going off of it's builder number of 69868, #1807 is believed to have been built in October of 1942 as GT-1304, (not affiliated with the Grand Trunk Western), for the U.S. War Department. Later renumbered to #2576, the locomotive was brought back to it's building grounds to service ALCO's Schenectady, NY plant. After arriving at Fort Bragg, NC, the renumbered #1807 would eventually be listed as government surplus, and subsequently
purchased by the MTM in 1979. Arriving in Mt. Clemens within the consist of a GTW freight train, the locomotive was brought to Selfridge Air Base and became MTM's prime motive power for over 25 years. #1807 currently resides in storage, with ongoing restoration efforts via our volunteer crew members slowly coming to fruition. |
